Details

We stayed at the Cottonwood RV Park for six nights in early August. The campground was clean, well maintained and the campground owner, Nancy, was friendly and helpful. The campground was nicely landscaped and had spacious sites and grounds.

Proximity to the San Juan River and recent heavy rains contributed to a larger population of mosquitoes in the area which were a nuisance in the evenings.

Cost

The campground daily rates were reasonable, about $33.50/night, including tax.

Amenities On Site or Nearby

The park offers only very basic amenities – showers, restrooms, barbecue and picnic area, and a playground for children. The campground has 15 full hookup pull-thru RV sites, 7 full hookup back-in sites, and 4 tent sites. The RV sites have 20 amp, 30 amp and 50 amp electrical.

There are very limited services available in Bluff – fuel, laundromat, mini-mart, and a few restaurants.  A small grocery store and other services are available in Blanding, Utah (about 26 miles). A Wal-Mart Super-center, grocery stores and many more services are available in Cortez, Colorado (about 76 miles).

Ratings (1-5)

Accessibility – 5/5

The Cottonwood RV Park is easily accessible from Highway 191. Entrance drive, access lanes and sites are wide enough not to pose a problem maneuvering a large rig into or out of a site. Sites are level and gravel surfaced. The campground has thoughtfully provided for handicapped access to the shower and restroom facility.

Facilities/Amenities – 3/5

As noted above, the park offers only very basic amenities. The campground has 15 full hookup pull-thru RV sites, 7 full hookup back-in sites, and 4 tent sites. The RV sites have 30 amp and 50 amp electrical. Sites feature a picnic table and most sites have a barbecue fire-box and a fire pit or ring.

Site quality – 4/5

The park offers both tent and RV sites – pull-thru or back-in. RV sites are spacious, level, surfaced with gravel, and have a fair amount of separation between sites. Most sites have one or more trees to provide shade.

Scenic Value – 3/5

The campground has a nice view of the bluffs south across the San Juan River behind the park, and to the north, but is surrounded by other properties. It’s best to take a drive to enjoy the scenery.

Location/Isolation – 4/5

The campground is just about two blocks from Highway 191 in a quiet area of town, so is well isolated from road noise.

Paws Friendliness – 4/5

The campground allows pets and is paws friendly. Walks around the spacious campground give opportunity to exercise your pet. Depending on time of day and season, mosquitoes are a problem. Another option is to take your pet for a walk in Calf Canyon, on the north side of town.

Overall Rating – 4/5

Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the Cottonwood RV Park and would enjoy returning. The campground is a good place to stop overnight or to serve as a base to explore the area around Bluff.

Additional info

Internet access

The campground provided free WiFi and there was a weak to moderate Verizon signal for MiFi access. We found the Verizon internet access slow and spotty. After deploying our Wilson trucker antenna and a cradle booster with the MiFi hot spot, we received much stronger Verizon signal and good internet access. We did not try the campground WiFi during our short stay.

Water Quality

The campground water tested very soft – we did not need a water softener with our filtration stack.
