Details

We stayed for seven nights at the Holbrook / Petrified Forest KOA Journey in mid-May of 2017. We found the campground staff friendly and helpful. This is a basic, clean, quiet, and well maintained KOA. We enjoyed several of the campground’s Cowboy Cookout barbecue dinners and pancake breakfasts.

Cost

We generally find that KOAs are pricey for our tastes, but we are willing to pay for the convenience for short stays or if there are not better alternatives. For seven nights at a 50 amp full hookup pull-thru site, we paid about $45 per night, including tax, our KOA Value Kard Rewards Discount and a $10 for one night promotion.

Amenities On Site or Nearby

The campground offers the basic amenities expected from a KOA, including full and partial hookup sites, dry tent sites, rental RVs and park model cabins, RV dump station, propane, restrooms and showers, laundry room, playground, horseshoes, tether-ball, volleyball, dog run, and swimming pool. The park has a small general store with basic groceries, household goods, camping supplies, souvenirs and tourist info for the local area. Grocery stores, restaurants, and automotive services are nearby in Holbrook.

Ratings (1-5)

Accessibility – 4/5

The campground is easily accessible from the I-40. Lanes in the park are well-maintained gravel. The park has pull-thru, back-in, and tent sites and can accommodate large rigs. The campground facilities have provisions for Universal access.

Facilities/Amenities – 3/5

The campground offers the basic amenities expected from a KOA, including full and partial hookup sites, dry tent sites, rental RVs and park model cabins, RV dump station, propane, restrooms and showers, game room, laundry room, playground, horseshoes, tether-ball, volleyball, dog run, and swimming pool. Facilities are clean and well maintained. Staff was friendly and helpful.

The campground features Cowboy Cookout barbecue dinners and pancake breakfasts – very convenient after a long day on the road or to start your day before another long drive, respectively.

Site quality – 3/5

RV sites are very basic, including only the full or partial hookups with 50/30/20 amp electric, cable TV and a picnic table. Sites are level, surfaced with gravel, and have a picnic table. Sites are wide enough to accommodate slide-outs and awnings, but otherwise have little separation between sites. Most RV sites have a small shade tree, but sites still feel very barren & desert-like.

Scenic Value – 2/5

The campground is nicely landscaped, but the area around the campground is a stark mix of barren desert, light industrial and rural properties, and interstate.

Location/Isolation – 3/5

The campground is on the outskirts of Holbrook, but is within sight of busy I-40 so does not feel very isolated. Surprisingly, despite proximity to I-40, little interstate road noise was noticeable. A major railroad passes through Holbrook, so distant train horns and rail traffic are heard at times.

Paws Friendliness – 4/5

The campground is pet friendly and has a large grassy enclosed pet run with cleanup bags. The campground is large enough for a decent walk with your pet.

Overall Rating – 3/5

Overall, the Holbrook / Petrified Forest KOA Journey is a very nice campground and a convenient place to stop for a few nights. We would certainly visit again while passing through the area.

Additional info

Internet access

We received a strong 4G Verizon signal at this campground. We did not need to deploy our cellular antenna and booster to improve MiFi hot spot internet access. The campground provided free WiFi, but we did not use this during our stay.

Water Quality

The water at this campground tested hard – we added our water softener to the water filtration stack.
