Details

We visited the Thousand Lakes RV Park for three weeks in late July and early August and very much enjoyed our stay. The park is very clean, well maintained, and provides a full range of sites and accommodations. The staff was helpful and very friendly.

The park seems to be doing very well for the summer season and was booked to capacity nearly every night. During our stay, the park developed an extra seven full hookup back-in sites.

The park served as a good base for exploring Capitol Reef National Park and other attractions in the area.

Cost

The rates at Thousand Lakes RV Park seem very reasonable. We qualified for the weekly rate of $195/week plus tax – about $31/night with tax.

Ratings (1-5)

Accessibility – 4/5

The RV park is easily accessible from Highway 24. Access lanes and sites are wide enough not to pose a problem maneuvering a large rig into or out of a site. Sites are level and gravel surfaced. There is no provision for handicapped access to the shower and restroom facility.

Site quality – 4/5

Site quality is quite good throughout the park. Trees throughout the park provide shade to the sites. All sites are provided with picnic tables and grills or fire rings. The park provides full hookup, water/electric only and tent sites, as well as cabin rentals. Electrical sites provide 20/30/50 Amp service. Sites and drives are surfaced with gravel. Most sites are separated with a small grassy strip.

Scenic Value – 4/5

Scenic value for the campground is high. The campground features lovely views of red rim rock cliffs to the north, pastoral ranch land to the south and west, as well as Boulder Mountain to the south.

Location/Isolation – 4/5

The campground is about a mile outside of the small town of Torrey along Highway 24. The highway receives little traffic, so there is not much road noise in the park. ATVs are popular in the area and some campers stage their ATV excursions from the campground. In our experience, the ATVers were courteous and idled their vehicles through the park. Noise from the ATVs was not excessive or a nuisance and was generally limited to mid-morning & late afternoon.

Paws Friendliness – 4/5

The campground allows pets and is paws friendly. The park does not have a fenced in pet run, but there are several grassy areas along the borders of the park to use as pet areas. The park is large enough for a good walk to exercise your pet.

Overall Rating – 4/5

Overall, this is a lovely park – we highly recommend the Thousand Lakes RV Park and we look forward to our next visit here.

Additional info

Internet access

This area of Utah does not have reliable Verizon service, although extended network data and voice roaming access is available – an expensive option for internet access. (We were not able to find a Verizon signal anywhere around Torrey, Hanksville, Boulder, Escalante or Loa. There is good Verizon signal in Richfield, along the I-70 and north on Highway 10.) There is a strong AT&T signal in the area, as reported by other guests and we could easily download eBooks to our Kindles using the Kindle AT&T Whisper-net connection. The Thousand Lakes campground provides free WiFi, although internet quality is variable, with occasional outages and periods of slow access.

(Bonus) Water Quality

The campground water tested extremely hard – we added our water softener to the water filtration stack.
