Wine Tasting and Coastal Drives

After a long winter with little travel, it feels great exploring the open road again. After leaving our winter digs at Silent Valley Club, we traveled to Paso Robles for a week-long stay at the Wine Country RV Resort in the heart of the central coast wine region of California. Although we have visited the area before and gone wine tasting on a few occasions, this was the first time we stayed in Paso Robles.

Scattered throughout Paso Robles and the surrounding area are more than 200 wineries with an amazing variety of wines. We were really looking forward to a more leisurely exploration of the area and opportunity to sample some of the wines. We were not disappointed!

While in Paso Robles, we enjoyed long drives down scenic back roads, through the vineyards, orchards, and oak-forested woodlands of the coastal hills. We particularly enjoyed tasting vintages from the Eberle, EOS, and Castoro wineries.

We also took drives to neighboring Cambria and along the coast to San Simeon and to Cayucos. We’ve stayed at Cambria several times in the past for our anniversary or for other special occasions. The timing of our trip worked out such that we again celebrated our anniversary at a favorite restaurant, the Moonstone Beach Bar and Grill.

One of the sights we enjoy each visit to this stretch of coast is the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery. From the viewpoint and boardwalk you can watch scores of Elephant Seals basking on the sand. Depending on time of year, you may see big bull seals fighting over the harem. This time of year, however, there were only females, young and adolescent males present on the strand.

Moving on from Paso Robles, we drove about 110 miles north to Salinas and checked into the Salinas / Monterey KOA for another week. From here we could explore around the Monterey area. We enjoyed a drive down the Cabrillo Highway, CA-1, to Big Sur. Although we’ve visited Big Sur several times before, we never get tired of the scenic drive on windy roads where rugged cliffs meet the sea. While in Big Sur we stopped for lunch at the Big Sur Roadhouse. The grill was dog friendly – Jasmine and Pepper enjoyed sharing a few fries with us on the patio.

That’s all for now. Take care and enjoy the ride!

  1. As usual great photos. We are in Mainz, Germany! We also went wine tasting today in the Rhine Valley. Your notes make us hungry to get back in the Motorhome! Love the last photo of Jasmine! Sooooo cute! See you all in the Fall!

  2. We really love the Central Coast, too, especially at this time of year.

It seems like the season for wine. We’re on our way down to SoCal’s French Valley today to visit some favorite wineries.

    Keep having fun out there!

    • Thanks, Thomas. Enjoy the tastings. We hope to visit some of the Napa and Sonoma area wineries on our next stop. Say “Hi!” to Ros… 🙂
