Details

We stayed for 7 nights at Bear River RV Park in early August, 2018. This is a full service, clean, and well-maintained park. The park has Good Sam and senior discounts. The park is very busy during peak season and is popular with caravans. Reservations are recommended.

Cost

For 7 nights at a 30 amp full hookup pull-thru site we paid about $41(CN) per night, including tax and Good Sam discount. There were no fees for pets or an extra vehicle.

Ratings (1-5)

Accessibility – 3/5

The campground is accessible via paved roads. Lanes in the campground are reasonably well-maintained gravel – some potholes need repair. The park has both pull-thru and back-in sites and can accommodate large rigs. The campground facilities have few provisions for Universal access.

Facilities/Amenities – 3/5

The campground offers basic amenities, including full and partial hookup sites, RV dump station, restrooms and coin-op showers, coin-op laundry, coin-op RV wash, free satellite WiFi (office area only), and cable TV. Facilities were clean and in decent repair.

Site quality – 3/5

RV Sites have full or partial (water/electric) hookups, cable TV, and a picnic table. Electric service is 30/20 amp. The campground has back-in and pull-thru sites. Sites are level gravel. Most back-in sites have good separation between sites.

Some sites are paired together – either pull-thru paired with a back-in or two back-in sites paired. Separation on these paired sites was poor and placement of hookups was on the wrong side for trailers on one back-in side (would be fine for a Class-A/B/C pulling nose-in). The park plans an upgrade to 50 amp service starting in the next travel season.

Scenic Value – 4/5

The park is nicely forested and has lovely views of rugged mountains.

Location/Isolation – 3/5

This quiet, forested park has lovely mountain views and feels somewhat isolated. The park gets very busy during peak season, especially with caravans. Closeness of sites and busyness of park when full detracts from the feeling of isolation.

Paws Friendliness – 3/5

The campground is pet friendly, but does not have an enclosed pet run or cleanup bag stations. The park is large enough for a decent walk with your pet.

Overall Rating – 4/5

Overall, the Bear River RV Park is a good place to stay while exploring the many attractions around Stewart, BC, and Hyder, Alaska. We enjoyed our stay here and would return another time.

Additional info

Internet access

We received a weak to moderate 4G signal at this campground. Access was roaming, but did not cost extra with our Verizon Unlimited plan. High speed data usage throttled down after 500 Mb per device per day. The campground had limited free satellite WiFi service, but only near the office.

Water Quality

The campground water tested hard – we added our water softener to the water filtration stack.

Bear Advisory

Note: This is bear country. Be alert and do not leave food or trash out which might attract bears. Keep pets on leash and do not leave them unattended outside.

Nearby Amenities

There is a gas station, grocery stores, restaurants, visitor information center and a few automotive and RV services nearby in Stewart. This area is remote – it is a long way to communities with a wider range of services (try Watson Lake, Whitehorse, or Prince George).
