Details

We stayed for one-night at the Dodge City KOA Journey in early April, 2020, and again for two-nights in mid September, 2020.

Caution: This is yet another place where you may not be able to trust your GPS. This is a new campground and due to recent construction in the area GPS and NAV system base maps may be out of date. Following a GPS may take you down a cul-de-sac about a block from campground. Check directions with the campground website map or a frequently updated online map, like Google Maps.

COVID-19 Pandemic Response: Fair – office/camp store closed except for several hours a day for check-in; check-in requires going into office; manager inconsistent with wearing mask, but socially distanced and plexiglass divider; laundry & bathhouse open; guest masks were required(?) on our second visit.

Cost

For the one-night and two-night visits at a 50 amp full hookup paved pull-thru site, we paid about $47 per night including taxes and Value Kard Rewards Discount. There were no additional fees for pets or an extra vehicle.

Ratings (1-5)

Accessibility – 3/5

(See GPS Nav caution above) Due to new construction, GPS/NAV system base maps may be out-of-date – navigation may not take you to the correct address for the park.

Depending on route taken, there are several rough rail crossings near the campground.

Lanes in the park are well-maintained asphalt. The park has pull-thru and back-in RV sites and can accommodate large rigs. The campground facilities have provisions for Universal access.

Facilities/Amenities – 4/5

The park amenities include full hookup 50 or 30 amp RV sites, tent sites, cabin rentals, restrooms, showers, laundry, storm shelter, Wi-Fi, cable TV, camp store, pavilions, tent camper cleaning table, propane, RV dump station, and large enclosed pet run. Facilities are clean and well-maintained.

The campground is adjacent the City of Dodge City’s Write Park, featuring: huge city dog park / dog run, free Write Park Zoo, Long Branch Lagoon Water Park, Play Park / Kids Jungle Gym, and picnic areas.

Site quality – 5/5

RV sites are full or partial hookup with 50 or 30 amp electric, Wi-Fi, picnic table, and fire ring. Park sites are pull-thru or back-in, clean, and most have (newly planted) shade trees. Site surface varies – concrete pad or gravel. Sites are level and spacious.

Scenic Value – 3/5

The campground is clean, has large grass areas, but is open and utilitarian/barren looking. As shade trees mature in years to come this will look much more attractive and park-like.

The campground is adjacent to scenic Wright Park and the green belt trails along the Arkansas River.

Location/Isolation – 4/5

The campground is set back far enough from busy streets to be fairly quiet and isolated feeling. The park may get noise from the nearby railroad. Sites are fair sized and do not feel crowded.

Paws Friendliness – 5/5

The campground is pet friendly, with cleanup stations and use of the huge Wright Park enclosed dog park/run. The campground is large enough for a good walk with your pet. For longer walks there is access to the green-belt trails along the Arkansas River.

Overall Rating – 4/5

Overall, the Dodge City KOA is a convenient and relaxing place to stay while visiting Dodge City. We enjoyed our short stay and would visit another time.
