Heritage RV Park, Homer, Alaska

Heritage RV Park is a big-rig and boat friendly campground on the scenic Homer Spit of Homer, Alaska. The park has spectacular views of Katchemak Bay and of the snow-capped and glacier-mantled mountains across the bay. The park features 1/2 mile of private beach with many shore side campsites. The park is next to a pedestrian/biking path and fishing lagoon and is just a short distance from the Homer small boat harbor, boardwalk, shops and restaurants. We stayed for 7 nights at Heritage RV Park in late June/early July, 2018. This is a full service, clean, and well-maintained park. The park is extremely popular during peak season, so reservations are recommended.

Cost

For 7 nights at a non-beachfront 50 amp full hookup pull-thru site we paid about $73 per night, including tax.

Ratings (1-5)

Accessibility – 3/5

The campground is easily accessible from paved Homer Spit Road. Lanes in the campground are reasonably well-maintained gravel, although some potholes need attention. The park has both pull-thru and back-in sites and can accommodate large rigs. The campground facilities have provisions for Universal access.

Although the park is big-rig and boat friendly, large rigs may have difficulty maneuvering in and out of some sites due to narrow lanes, poor parking by other guests and placement of concrete curbs at sites.

Facilities/Amenities – 4/5

The campground offers basic amenities, including full hookup sites with 50/30/20 amp electric service, RV dump station, restrooms and free showers, coin-op laundry, free WiFi, satellite TV, gift shop and Espresso Bar. The park also features 24-hour security and registration, a computer station, putting green, patio, barbecue and picnic area. The gift shop features authentic Alaska Native Art and handicrafts.

The campground has a 1/2 mile private beach for fishing, paddle-boarding, clamming or beach-combing. The campground is next to the Homer Spit biking and pedestrian path, as well as to the fishing lagoon. The park has a dry storage area for boat trailer and other vehicle parking.

Site quality – 3/5

RV Sites have full hookups with 50/30/20 amp electric, satellite TV, and a picnic table. Sites pads are gravel with little separation between sites. The campground has back-in and pull-thru sites. The park features premium sites along the beachfront and fishing lagoon. Placement of concrete curbs at sites can make it difficult for a large rig to maneuver in/out of the site.

Scenic Value – 5/5

The park has spectacular views of the Kachemak Bay and of towering snow-capped peaks across the bay.

Location/Isolation – 4/5

The park has a great location with spectacular scenery, especially along the beach-front sites, but does not feel very isolated. Sites are very close together and can feel quite crowded when the park is full. The park is just off busy Homer Spit Road and receives much road noise.

Paws Friendliness – 4/5

The campground is pet friendly, but does not have an enclosed pet run or cleanup bag stations. The park is large enough for a decent walk with your pet, especially along the beach. For water-loving dogs, the beach is a great place for chasing balls in the bay. The park is adjacent to miles of pedestrian/bike paths with access to other beaches for longer walks.

Overall Rating – 4/5

Overall, the Heritage RV Park is a good place to stay while exploring the many attractions of Homer, Homer Spit, and of the surrounding area. We enjoyed our stay here and would love to return another time.

Additional info

Internet access

We received a moderate 4G signal at this campground. Since this was not a Verizon network access was roaming, but did not cost extra with our Unlimited plan. Our MiFi hot spot would not connect to the local network, while our mobile phone hot spots worked as expected. We used the free campground WiFi service a few times. Internet speeds were slow on either campground or cellular connections.

Water Quality

The campground water tested soft – we did not add our water softener to the water filtration stack.
