Details

We stayed for 7 nights at Jasper Gates Resort and RV Park in mid August, 2018. This is a full service, clean, and well-maintained park. Staff was friendly and helpful.

Note: Jasper and Banff National Parks are extremely popular destinations and there are few campgrounds in the area. Be sure to book reservations far in advance. We had originally intended to stay at a campground in Jasper National Park, but were unable to get a reservation, even with booking in May. We were lucky to get a reservation at Jasper Gates. It still worked out well for our travel plans and we enjoyed our stay here.

Cost

For 7 nights at a 50 amp full hookup pull-thru site we paid about $54(CN) per night, including tax. There were no fees for pets or an extra vehicle.

Ratings (1-5)

Accessibility – 3/5

The campground is easily accessible from the Yellowhead Highway, AB-16. Lanes in the campground are reasonably well-maintained gravel. The park has both pull-thru and back-in sites and can accommodate large rigs. Some sites are tight for large rigs to maneuver into or out of due to trees or other obstacles. The campground facilities have some provisions for Universal access.

Facilities/Amenities – 4/5

The campground offers basic amenities, including full and partial (electric-only) hookup sites, no-hookup RV/tent sites, RV dump station, restrooms and free showers, coin-op laundry, picnic shelters, playgrounds, lawn chess, recreation/exercise room, and free WiFi. The resort also features a small camp store, motel, rental cabins, and rental RVs. Facilities were clean and in good repair.

Site quality – 4/5

RV sites have full, partial (electric-only), or no hookups; fire ring; and a picnic table. Electric service is 50, 30, or 15 amp. Sites are gravel, generous in size, shaded, and have good separation between sites. The campground has back-in and pull-thru sites.

Note: The campground is built on a hillside so many sites will have some slope, particularly towards the back of a site.

Scenic Value – 5/5

This forested resort has a rustic, north-woods look, spectacular mountain vistas, and many nice landscaping touches, including colorful plantings and a small recycling creek flowing through the campground.

Location/Isolation – 4/5

This forested park has a great location near the east entrance to Jasper National Park. The campground feels isolated, but does get a lot of noise from the busy Yellowhead Highway – the hills behind the campground act as an amphitheater in reflecting the road noise.

Paws Friendliness – 4/5

The campground is pet friendly, but does not have an enclosed pet run or cleanup bag stations. The park is large enough for a decent walk with your pet (…and the nearby Folding Mountain Brewing taproom has a dog-friendly patio).

Overall Rating – 5/5

Overall, the Jasper Gates Resort and RV Park is a lovely place to stay while exploring the many attractions around Jasper National Park. We enjoyed our visit here and would love to return another time.

Additional info

Internet access

We received a weak to moderate 4G signal at this campground. Access was roaming, but did not cost extra with our Verizon Unlimited plan. High speed data usage throttled down after 500 Mb per device per day. We were unable to connect to the free campground WiFi service from our site.

Water Quality

The campground water tested hard – we added our water softener to the water filtration stack.

Nearby Amenities

Gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants, and some automotive services are available nearby in Hinton (16 miles/26 km) or Jasper (35 miles/57 km), AB. A wider range of shopping and services are available in Edmonton, Calgary, or Prince George.

Bonus: The Folding Mountain Brewing Taproom and Kitchen are just a short walk from the campground. Excellent micro-brews, food, and a dog-friendly patio – much recommended!
